THE COLOR OF SOUND. Tone. Intensity. Vibration. These qualities are common to both musical and visual arts. But rarely do these two arts perform together – until now. In this special master-class-style concert, Secession's Artistic Director Jane Ring Frank collaborates with distinguished Boston-area painters to demonstrate how music and painting can spontaneously inform and inspire each others' creations. While the Boston Secession explores the connections between the human voice and the color wheel itself, the arts will be painting in real-time throughout the performance. At the end, the audience will witness the two arts converge and original paintings come to life – a thrilling synthesis of sound and sight. Tickets available online at www.bostonsecession.org (ask me about discounts!)

THE BOSTON SECESSION presents Jean Cocteau's ORPHEUS, a live film + music event. The Boston Secession performs live music as accompaniment to a rare classic of French cinema. A mesmerizing mélange of 1950s high fashion and surrealism, Cocteau's realization of the Orpheus journey to the underworld is no toga-draped affair. Rather, Cocteau's Orphée pits a dreamy, alienated Left Bank poet, Orpheus (Jean Marais), against the wiles of the dark temptress of Death (Maria Casares) – whose turned-out entourage includes a mostly-dead chauffeur with a heart of gold, a classic Rolls Royce whose radio spontaneously declaims surrealist non-sequiturs, and a sexy leather-jacketed motorcycle goon squad. The Boston Secession underscores the dream-like qualities of the film with its own gorgeous and hypnotic performance of live music including excerpts from Fauré's Pavanne, Monteverdi's Orfeo, Poulenc's Gloria, Mozart's “Laudate Dominum,” Stravinsky, Bach, Handel and more.

SECESSION: The Stravinsky Code. As a musical descendant of Schubert, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky drew creative inspiration from a special scale or "code." This pattern dominated his compositional style from the early Petrushka to the later Symphony of Psalms. Join The Boston Secession for a glimpse into the secrets of Stravinsky's great choral achievements--Le Roi des Etoiles, Les Noces, Symphony of Psalms, and more. Hear the Stravinsky code and its influence on twentieth century composers Carl Orff and Leonard Bernstein.

At the centerpiece of the program is Hugo Distler's haunting yet redemptive Totentanz (Dance of Death), a 14-movement work that gives human voice to the dying process. The program also includes Brahms' little known Missa Canonica, Ruth Lomon's Chor der Waisen, and Edwin London's realization of J.S. Bach's "Komm, Susser Tod." Hear the music live! Buy the CD!
