A mesmerizing mélange of 1950s high fashion and surrealism, Cocteau's realization of the Orpheus journey to the underworld is no toga-draped affair. Rather, Cocteau's Orphée pits a dreamy, alienated Left Bank poet, Orpheus (Jean Marais), against the wiles of the dark temptress of Death (Maria Casares) – whose turned-out entourage includes a mostly-dead chauffeur with a heart of gold, a classic Rolls Royce whose radio spontaneously declaims surrealist non-sequiturs, and a sexy leather-jacketed motorcycle goon squad.
